Extreme sports enthusiasts competed in Clay County over the weekend in the Florida State Cyclocross Championship racing mountain bikes in a cross-country course with obstacles.

The Florida Bicycle Racing Association hosted about 100 riders Sunday at Ronnie Van Zant Memorial Park in Lake Asbury.

Cyclocross is a growing mountain-bike sport that features obstacles of small hurdles, to tree stumps, to “flyovers” where the competitors must carry their bikes over hills or other obstructions.

The event included several divisions and a 2-mile course over sand, dirt and grass terrain to go with the obstacles. Youth competitors raced for 30 minutes while the others competed for an hour.

“Bringing a growing sport like cyclocross is a great opportunity to introduce Clay County to the racing community,” said Mike Cella, Clay County Board of County Commission chairman. “We have a tremendous park system and having it used like this for a weekend will make a great economic impact on our community.”
