SoCal Interscholastic Cycling League will host Race #5 in the 2022 season of Interscholastic Mountain Bike Racing, 2 p.m. Saturday, April 30 for the Middle School division and 9:15 a.m. Sunday, May 1 for the High School division at Lake Cachuma Recreation Area.
Local cycling teams will include Santa Ynez Valley Youth Composite Mountain Bike Team, Santa Barbara-based South Coast Composite Mountain Bike Team, and Santa Maria Valley Composite Mountain Bike Team, all sanctioned by National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA).
All Santa Barbara County teams are dedicated to the development of youth in mountain biking. Each team encourages and welcomes new participants of all skill levels to visit their pit and cheer on their teams. The family outdoor event starts and finishes on the large lawn between the entrance kiosk and the swimming pool. Food will be available at Hook’d located by the launch ramp.
The course is described as a purpose-built and challenging out-and-back course that winds its way through the Cachuma campground. It features some hard climbs with great views and some fun single and double track. One high school lap is about six miles with 450 feet of climbing.
Level 3 Middle School Boys and Girls will be racing two laps of the high school course at finals. One middle school lap is about 4.9 miles with 400 feet of climbing. The course will travel through the Mohawk Camp area, east of the main entrance.
SoCal Interscholastic Cycling League was organized in 2008 to provide a well-defined race season for high school student athletes and to promote the formation of teams at public and private high schools.
In 2014 that grew to include a middle school program designed to introduce middle school-aged riders to the sport of mountain biking, focused heavily on skills, fun, fitness and responsibility with a taste of the competitive aspects of mountain biking.
With the cooperation of local race promoters and sponsors, SoCal Interscholastic Cycling League produces a first-class series of races in addition to providing training for coaches and riders. The league is working to make interscholastic (grades 6-12) racing the easiest way for youth to get involved in the world of competitive cycling.
NICA was formed in 2009 after the successful formation of the NorCal and SoCal leagues to promote high school mountain biking programs in the U.S. NICA provides governance, leadership, and program support to regional high school and middle school mountain biking organizations. It currently serves 31 leagues across the country, in 30 states.
This weekend of racing will be the final race weekend of the 2022 season before the championships, May 13-15, also at Lake Cachuma Recreation Area.
