Woman on phone takes out race-leading cyclist in terrifying crash at end of 88km bike race – 7NEWS

A police investigation has been launched after a terrifying incident at the finish line of the Cicloturista Condaca Salmor Bike event in Spain’s Canary Islands on Sunday (AEDT).

Vision of the incident, which you can see above, shows a woman on her phone walking across the road right as the race leader sprints to the finish line of the 88km race.

The woman can be seen looking up from her phone to see the cyclist just a metre away from her.

A bone-crunching collision ensues as spectators are heard screaming out in horror.

Both the cyclist and the pedestrian appear to slam their heads into the concrete during the crash, however local news reports suggest the injuries were far more serious for the man on the bike.

While the woman was reportedly treated at the scene, the cyclist was taken to the nearby Hospital Nuestra Señora de Los Reye with head injuries.

He was later reported to be suffering from a moderate head injury and memory loss.

In a statement, the local emergency services confirmed an investigation was underway.

“An injured cyclist in El Hierro has been taken to hospital following a collision with another person,” the statement read.

“The information we received was that the cyclist had run over another person during a sporting event. The cyclist appeared from a first evaluation to be suffering from non-serious head injuries.

“The woman who had been knocked over was treated at the scene by medical services covering the event.

“A police investigation into the incident is underway.”
