Set a schedule. Plan a timeline. Find your potential.

Weekend athletes, take note. Kim Geist, a retired racing cyclist, shared some training tips recently at Body 4 Life in Morristown.

Geist’s motivational talk, Coach Yourself To Success, weighed the pros and cons of hiring a coach, and common pitfalls of training oneself.

Winner of a bronze medal in the Women’s Points Race at the 2015 Track Cycling World Championships in Paris, Geist helped her team achieve gold in Women’s Team Pursuit at both the 2017 and 2018 championships. She retired from racing late last year.

Now 32, Geist resides in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley.

Body 4 Life owner Rod Murray, a cycling coach and author of Dynamic Flexibility: Train Your Body To Move, said proceeds from the event went to InTandem Cycling, a New York charity that organizes tandem rides for those physically or mentally unable to cycle on their own.

“This spreads disability awareness,” said InTandem’s Jonathon Epstein, son of the late Marty Epstein of Marty’s Reliable Cycle fame. “It gives people a change to see people with disabilities as contributing members of society, because tandem is totally equal effort.”

Last weekend’s sold-out talk drew 35 local athletes. Geist’s suggestions included:.

  • Keep track of your progress and evaluate frequently.
  • Choose goals that match your talents.
  • Set aside time and plan a regimen.
  • Always keep in mind what you want to achieve.
  • Don’t be afraid to find a coach if you can’t meet your goals on your own.
