Discovery 947 Ride Joburg: What you need to know

The 2019 Discovery 947 Ride Joburg is the 23rd edition of the road race. It will see the field tackle the route in reverse for the second year in a row.

Last year saw the organizers use the reverse version of the route for the first time in 21 years.

Unfortunately with races of this size, it means that motorists will need to think carefully about their routes if they need to be out and about in Johannesburg tomorrow.

Discovery 947 Ride Joburg road closures

The City of Joburg, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department and Johannesburg Road Agency will be implementing total road closures on the roads used for the route.

The organisers have committed to opening the streets as soon as possible motorists should expect significant disruption on the roads tomorrow.

The brand new 40km Short Ride will be starting from Melrose Arch. Motorists can expect disruption and increased traffic until 11:30.

For this period, the Athol Oaklands road and the bridge over the M1 will be one-way only. The full race route will start and end at Riversands Commercial park off the R511 in Fourways.

Cyclists will then proceed through the streets of Johannesburg from Steyn City Boulevard onto Cedar Road followed by Witkoppen road then up Jan Smuts Avenue onto the M1 South.

Cyclists will then head back to the start via the R55; through Summit Road and then back up until they finish on Riversands Boulevard.

Riversands Commercial Park will be offering free parking to supporters looking to experience the atmosphere of Johannesburg’s biggest road race.

Traffic officials will regulate the flow of traffic in the area during the event.

“The residents, families and supporters that enable the cycling community to participate in Discovery 947 Ride Joburg make the event the world-class cycling experience it is. Without their support on the route and accommodating the road closures, this calendar event would not be possible.”
